Tiles alone, and mounted for hanging

I've been gearing up for an art show and sale this weekend. Sometimes, instead of framing a piece under glass I decide to mount it on canvas. Sometimes it looks good with the canvas simply painted. Other times it needs something more. Here are a few examples of 'something more'.

These will be on display, and available for purchase at Solar Gardens September 19 and 20, from 11-5. They also have a small restaurant with a wood-fired pizza oven!

IDYLL
is on a Bijou tile.
It's mainly colored pencil but there's a bit of tangling here too.
I didn't intend a vaguely stained glass look, but that's what I got.
I added the white dots at the intersections because the black was too strong.

Tangles: Pearlz, Printemps

THE THREE WYRD SISTERS
is on a classic zentangle tile.
The colored dots at the lower right are metallic ink.
Much as I love the original tile, once it was mounted on canvas it seemed to need a lot of finishing.
I extended the 'bubbles' out the bottom, and even extended the roof peaks.

Tangles: Dex, Diva Dance, Jemz, Jonqal, Paradox, Printemps,
Romanancy, Sanibelle, Spinning, Tipple

NIGHT KNOLL
I posted this tile earlier and have now decided which way is up! Once I'd mounted it on canvas, in addition to painting the surround I added a small, round piece of mother-of-pearl for a moon, and some zigzag tape on the right.

ANDEAN RAINBOWS
began with a round tile in colored ink and pencil.
Unfortunately I don't seem to have a photo of the original tile, but I expect you can see it. ;)
I mounted it on canvas and painted the canvas black and off-white. Then I sliced through the canvas in places and ran an actual rainbow-colored ribbon through it in two directions. Occasionally the ribbon was too dark so I added little white stripes on top of it, and to soften the edges a little I put thin white stripes in the black sections outside the ribbons too.

(For more about running ribbons through a canvas, see my earlier post "How Ribbony came to be".)

  2. Those are just amazing!!! Is the canvas those small stretched canvases? How do you attach the tiles?? What a wonderful way to display your work. If I ever do one suitable for framing, I'll give it a go!

    1. Yes, I buy stretched canvases; don't want to waste my time doing that ! use acrylic matte medium as 'glue'. The only thing about this process is that you can't undo/un-'frame' it, it's permanent!

  8. Wow…I cannot wait to try this. Are the canvases that you used 3/4" wrapped, 2" wrapped or what?
    Do you wire these?

  9. Hi, Margaret! As always something beautiful from you for us lucky folks. And now I have a question. Did you do a tile way back in the winter that had the look of embossing? I think you achieved the look through shading... Am I making any sense here?

    1. I'm not quite sure what you mean, Angela. I know it's possible to impress a soft or thick paper and then to use color pencil on top. The impressed lines remain white while the paper top gets colored. Is that perhaps what you're thinking of?

    2. Yes, that's what I mean. I thought you did a tile like that, but maybe not...Thanks, anyway. I think I'll leave embossing for someone else to do...

  12. Hi, Margaret. I just started tangling recently (although time is always an issue) and I came across your blog through tanglepatterns and have really enjoyed your blog. Please keep it up! I was pleased to discover you live in Saskatoon. I live in BC but spent a rewarding six years in Saskatoon in the 2000's.

    Can't wait to read more,
